Oh my God, look at her buns! Once you look at them you can’t seem to take your eyes of off those beautiful, fluffy, succulent buns. We are still talking about bread. I guess I am pretty late to jump on the Matcha train and I will probably not stop this winter until I have used up all the matcha powder I bought. These matcha white chocolate poppy seed buns are the very first thing that came to my mind. It is like a traditional take on a classic pastry that we do here. Except it is usually rolled like a cinnamon bun and uses regular chocolate not white one.
For some reason I was convinced that with the amount of dough I would make pastries small enough to put in my muffin tin. Because I wanted them to rise upwards rather than all over the place. None the less, they were a hit. This recipe yields enough dough and enough filling so there is really none left over of either one. I do advise you to make more, but smaller buns. I made six, but I think 8-10 would’ve been perfect. These Matcha white chocolate poppy seed buns are the perfect treat to have with your afternoon coffee.
You see, the only real problem with making them so big was that it was hard to eat one bun in one sitting. It somehow called for more than one coffee or sharing. But who really wants to share? Not me. Another way to eat homemade pastries is by not really eating them. You just travel back and forth trough your kitchen or pass by the pan and the bun just keeps getting smaller and smaller because each time you pass it, you tear off a small piece and devour it. And at some point you just realize that there is one less bun to worry about.
But my all time favorite way to finish a whole cake or a pan of buns, pastries, rolls or whatever you got when there is no real occasion they were made for, is to go and give them to your friends. I took a couple to my work and shared with my co-workers. Not only should one not eat a whole pan of these, just speaking from experience, but hoarding them will only make them go stale and eventually you will have to throw them out and it makes me cry whenever I have to throw something out. Treat your friends = less food waste = happier and more grateful friends.
These buns have the same brioche dough recipe, except for the matcha of course, as this Nutella babka. Also a sweet bake to try.
Don’t forget to make yourself a cuppa before tearing apart that beautiful green hued bun and taking the first bite.
