For the first time in like 5 years, we have a proper winter. The snow is everywhere and it is cold. That makes the thought of tropical drinks even more alluring. This is not actually a tropical drink if you associate tropical drinks with Tiki style cocktails. The green leaves of my slowly dying ficuses give a warm vibe to this matcha tequila fizz.
I have been wanting to make a cocktail with matcha for quite some time now and the sole purpose of it is the beautiful green it is. But I needed a perfect inspiration. I had to decide between tequila and mezcal because matcha has those beautiful earthy notes that I wanted to bring out in the drink. I decided upon a wonderful Blanco tequila. This matcha tequila fizz is made with Rooster Rojo Blanco tequila. Which was the perfect base for my drink with its slightly sweet notes.
Mixed with green matcha powder, egg white, lime juice, and agave syrup it makes a strong green potion that served up on ice and topped off with a dry tonic turns into an afternoon cocktail. But don’t think that this green potion won’t kick you in the eyes after a few sips. This matcha tequila fizz is a strong, a little bit sweet, and earthy cocktail. It wouldn’t be perfect on an actual hot summer’s day, but it is perfect waiting for them.
I would probably pair this drink with a large bowl of spicy tortilla chips and guacamole equally as green as our cocktail. The fizz style of cocktails is something that is easy to play on, just change the few main ingredients, keep the feel of the proportions and you got yourself a nice drink. While of course, being careful and not making something that is not drinkable. Please, do not pair matcha with brown spirits or Amari. I have made my fair share of drinks that look like a puddle on the street corner. Just like with food, we drink with our eyes first.
